Welcome

Welcome to Federal Twist Design

‘… even after over 50 years of gardening and visiting gardens, it made me rethink what a garden can be and do.’ – Monty Don on Federal Twist, American Gardens (BBC series)

This is my garden before it became a garden ...

... a clearing in the woods, sunlight streaming down through the mist, illuminating the forest behind. But this is my garden, not yours. Yours will certainly be different.

The starting point is always sense of place. What opportunities, what benefits does your site offer? What is its potential? How does it make you feel?

Do you live in a home with acres of land, a small cottage, a modernist retreat in the woods, a townhouse, or in a development with hundreds of homes? You can find your own sense of place in your personal motivations and preferences, in exploring why you want a garden, always keeping in mind what is appropriate to your local environment.
